People from all walks of life arrive at the doors of OPUK, from full-time athletes to those with chronic conditions, we take pride in giving our all to improve their performance. We're taking the opportunity to shine a spotlight of one of our regulars, and are thrilled to announce we now have our very own international masters athlete – Iain Bishop!

Iain has been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2019 ETU Sprint Distance European Triathlon Championships for his age group. The championship will take place in the summer in Kazan, Russia 26th-28th July this year. Iain qualified for the championships with a time of 1hr 27 minutes at the Worthing Triathlon in July 2018, finishing within 14% of the winner – the criteria to be eligible for selection being a finish within 20% of the winner. Iain did his first triathlon in 2013 after running his fist marathon.

Iain started coming to OPUK after having knee issues and was recommended to seek treatment at OPUK. An Orthopaedic consultant informed Iain that the cartilage in his knee was wearing excessively, to the point where he was advised to discontinue his running. Iain has since utilised personal training, group training and physiotherapy to put himself in a position to carry on running and partaking in triathlons. Iain believes regular attendance to our signature One Athletic session has made a big difference “I am much stronger and much faster, and I am sure that I would not have met the qualifying standard without them. One Performance compliments all my other training as I swim, run and cycyle 2/3 times a week” says Iain. “My cycling has improved a lot, particularly going up hills and even my swimming has improved with the upper body work we do. I also used to get a lot of back pain, but no more as my back and core muscle are much stronger. I have also learnt how to lift properly, and of course I can now run again.” This has all been verified by a Sports Doctor who supported Iain’s training approach to returning to running and triathlons.

My primary objective is to enjoy the experience of racing in GBR colours, part of the national team – can’t wait!

“Representing my country isn’t something I expected to achieve at my age (Iain being the northside of 50 years!), so my primary objective is to enjoy the experience of racing in GBR colours, part of the national team – can’t wait! Obviously, I want to do as well as I can and get a PB if possible. I will be leaving everything on the course.”

The team at OPUK want to send the biggest of congratulations on being selected to represent our country and wish him all the luck at the Championships. We look forward to supporting Iain in the lead up to the event and are proud of the hard work and determination he has put in to get there – even against the odds
